the middle

Who would have thought that it's wrong to say "pardon" but correct to say "what?", that "toilet" is middle class and "loo" is posh....
I suppose it's trying-too-hard to seem upper class what makes you middle class.
Kind of like reading Chomsky and considering yourself an intellectual for it.
