9-11

Five years ago I was living here, which is about as close as I ever wish to be near the site of a major catastrophe. Everyone below Canal Street was evacuated. I left my window open that night and I must have inhaled a substantial amount of WTC. The days following the event were strangely peaceful. Only residents were allowed in my area, I talked to neighbors and people I had only known briefly. We made plans and bonded and became friends.
And in a way the destruction of the towers, which were as ugly as they were iconic and expensive, is a great opportunity to build something more beautiful.... nobody would have ever dared tear them down, I don't think, before the 99 year leases businesses had were up. And if I were a building, I really coudn't think of a better way to go.
I just hope politics won't interfere with the new design. Seems to be changing frequently.

J.....

Hate to dampen your enthusiasm, but they're gonna put up a "Freedom Tower" with a spire that reaches 1776 feet. It will become the tallest building in America.

Does that sound like a good idea to you?

Would you by any chance sign up for a suite on the top floor?

I know it sounds like I haven't learned a thing, but....
before I say no to a penthouse suite in the freedom tower I'd like to hear the lease conditions. If it's less than my apartment on Mott I might just take it.

I do however see your point *slowly nods her head several times in deep thought while snacking on some freedom fries- no, French fries, excuse me- * and now that I know somebody is reading this part of my blog I promis to work on my spelling....

By the way, you gotta check out the story in the Times today. They never bothered asking any of the people (govt workers mostly) that they expect to move into the Freedom Tower, what they might think about the idea.

Turns out, they're not stepping foot in there.

This thing will be going on for a long time.
